Gabba fever…

January 6th, 2010  No Comments

I have never gotten so many requests for the same themed cake! I had 4 Yo Gabba Gabba cakes within a week! I LOVE YGG so I was happy and thrilled to do them all. It was so fun coming up with different designs to please each customer. I really wanted to make each one unique…a cake is something special and i love when I can make something special and unique for someone who is equally special and unique. This cake was for 2 year old Sadie.

We incorporated the signature starburst with a happy birthday message and the bottom tier was decorated with each character made out of fondant.

I have to admit…I walked into Jillian’s (Sadie’s mom) house and I was totally scoping it out for ideas for my daughter’s birthday party the following day! She had all kinds of cute decorations for the party. She put Sadie in a homemade YGG shirt with Foofa popping out of a cupcake (that’s where I got the idea to incorporate a cupcake into my girls shirts). The cake went perfectly with all she had set up for the party. Such a fun cake to do.

Thank you again for the wonderful cake!!! We had SOOOO many compliments and comments on it! And then there was almost an all out war on who got the first character slice!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SADIE!

Cupcake cutie turns 2!

January 5th, 2010  4 Comments

One of my 3 little cupcakes turned 2 today! My middle child Anabelle celebrated her birthday today. Actually, the real celebration was Sunday. We threw her a Yo Gabba Gabba party and proclaimed that our Ani was turning “TWO”dee (one of the characters names is Toodee). I have to be honest, there were lots of really cool ideas running through my head for the cake and decorations, but things are just way too busy, I had to hold back a little (actually a lot) in order to even get a party together. I pulled an all nighter the night prior to the party and while I was content with the outcome, I had so much more I would have loved to have done. So here’s a peek at the festivities!

IMG_5110

My little Ani on Halloween dressed as Toodee…we used this picture in the invitations.

I was swamped with work and a new baby and moving, so didn’t get to ordering any themed party decorations. Yo Gabba Gabba is SO hard to find in stores. So, 2 DAYS BEFORE the party I ran to find something that would work…heres what I did:

IMG_5581IMG_5578IMG_5577IMG_5584I was able to find bubbles in some of the colors of the characters and just added some of the simple facial features and POOF! they all came to life. The bubbles were a hit with the kids, but messy. I applied the same idea to the goodie bags, party hats and buckets for centerpieces. I was going to do the same to all the balloons but ran out of time! On a side note, I asked my 3 year old what kind of party she wanted, response: a Foofa party!

Here’s what the cake table looked like almost complete:

Here’s a shot of the cake!

So, the original plan was to do a 4 tier cake…each tier was going to have one of the Gabba lands as the background and the coordinating character on each tier with Toodee on top holding a ballon and the Yo Gabba Gabba starburst somewhere. Well, it was either a huge cake (with tons of leftovers) and no decorations, or a small cake and decorations. I opted for the tiny cake with cupcakes…much easier! I had a slight catastrophe with the liners…the all began to separate from the cupcake…solution: ribbon tied around each cupcake.

I got SO many great shots of my angel on her big day, and I really tried to limit the number I posted.  Here’s my Ani enjoying her cupcakes! If you look closely you can see the shirt i made her is Toodee holding what else? A CUPCAKE!

Our site got a make over!

December 5th, 2009  8 Comments

First, can I say WHAT A YEAR! One year ago this month I embarked on the journey that is cupcakes.

While yes, a majority of the business was in my hands, from baking, decorating, and flavor concepts, to marketing, blogging, and even clerical….by NO means did I do it alone. I’ll try and make it quick, but here is where my gratitude lies: I am blessed to have help from my NUMBER 1, my husband. Thanks for ALL the PATIENCE and SUPPORT. My now three daughters Alicia (3), Anabelle (2), and Angelica (1 week)….they have no idea what lies ahead in the cupcake world!tps family My Mom and sisters who have been there to help with baby sitting, taste testing, and creative ideas. My Dad, who is my voice of reasoning. My genius of a brother and sister who help in all creative aspects from packaging, marketing and website design. Ruth my beautiful model. Kitchen Couture for partnering up with us to bring you a couture line of aprons exclusive to Two Parts Sugar. Sugar Cat Studio for partnering with us to bring you couture cupcake wrappers. Dan Silberstein for getting us in last minute for last year’s LA Cupcake Challenge. The ENTIRE Super Delicious Team, Food Network and Ren Messer for believing in me! Katie B for graciously extending a hand to someone in need. Andy Ortega Photography for some amazing photos. The awesome bloggers out there….Zen Cupcake, Bake And Destroy (Natalie),Cupcakes Take The Cake, The Cupcake Activist, and anyone else who has helped spread the cupcake word. The CUSTOMERS……without you we would not have a place in the kitchen! Thank you to anyone and everyone who has crossed our path and helped to get us where we are today!

So, as I was saying….This time last year we launched our website and life has been madness (in a good way) ever since. I have to admit, being a wife…no wait, a coach’s wife,  raising 2 children (now 3) and running a business is no easy feat. There were many times I wanted to give up, but my stubbornness wouldn’t allow me to. In the past year we have whipped up lots of cupcakes, cakes and treats, and have learned lots along the way. Our favorite moments of the year include participating in the arthritis walk to help spread the word about amazing kids like Faith who suffer from Juvenile Arthritis. Almost as rewarding, our blog was featured in the OC register, we took second in the LA Cupcake Challenge in the best traditional category, and auditioned and earned a spot on The Food Network’s CUPCAKE WARS (due to air December 27)! Needless to say it has been quite a BIG first year of baking for us!

This post is just to let all of our supporters, customers, family and friends how much we truly appreciate EVERYTHING! Also, to let you all know we are NOT slowing down! We have lots of aspirations for 2010! Some of our newest features include….a “make-over” for our website, new packaging exclusive to Two Parts Sugar, our “shop” which will include couture aprons and cupcake wrappers, new gourmet treats added to our menu, and much, much more! Events where you can find us: The Food Network’s CUPCAKE WARS, air date December 27, 2009…..The LA Cupcake Challenge, February 20, 2010…..The Arthritis Walk May 16, 2010! Please keep checking back for the latest, and if you have an event you’d like us to participate in or would like to place an order let us know!

Welcome baby Adrienne!

June 26th, 2009  4 Comments

My youngest sister Alicia is pregnant with her first baby! She is due August 7, 2009 and I really could not be more excited! Being 7 years older than her, I have seen and remember a lot of her childhood. Alicia has been through A LOT in her short 21 years of life….some things brought upon herself, others just plain bad luck. Through it all she has come out on top and has a much better outlook on life. I still worry about her a lot (almost as if she were a daughter of mine) and about the decisions she will make in her life. I can truly say I am proud of EVERY single one of her accomplishments, big or small, and  how far she has come, especially this past year. Alicia…I love you more than you could ever know and I will be here for you always!

OK….ON TO THE CUPCAKES!!!! So, Alicia is very girly so I knew her cake/cupcakes would have to reflect that. Her shower will be held at Mimi’s Cafe and will be decorated in pink, pearls, and flowers! The cake had to fit in perfectly. We started with the obvious….pink, pearls, and flowers. Then we decided upon some little pink booties to tie in the baby aspect of it all. Here’s what we came up with!

baby shower cake/cupcakes Adrienne

Baby Adrienne, I cannot wait for you to arrive! I can’t wait to see you smile, laugh, cry, and all that other baby stuff! I can’t wait to hold you in my arms, rock you to sleep, and yes, even change your stinky diaper! I can’t wait for you to play with my kiddos! I JUST CAN’T WAIT TO BE AN AUTIE!

Please, let us know what you think…If you have and questions, or would like to place an order you can reach us here!

Dora Mermaid cake

June 8th, 2009  2 Comments

So, this weekend my eldest daughter turned 3 years old! How time flies! She wanted a Dora party and immediately I started thinking CAKE! Anticipating the sunny California weather, I thought hey, let’s do a water type party. We can get an inflatable water slide and make it a Dora Mermaid theme. Needless to say the weather was horrible the week prior and we canceled the slide and went for the bouncer instead. Too bad all the party favors I got were water guns, inflatable Dora swim rings/tubes, and other water related items…go figure! But the cake, ahhhh the cake! I immediately knew what I wanted to do.

I wanted a 3D type effect for the waves and wanted it to be fondant, dora Mermaid on rocks as a topper and filled in with little fish. Well, it was a fairly simple cake (or so I thought) until I got to that darn fondant! i wanted to do marshmallow fondant cause I wanted it to be yummy. Ok really people….made of marshmallows or not, NOBODY eats it! I am SO going with pre-made from now on! I had to get 9 different shades of blue for this cake….and marshmallow fondant is not easy to blend colors (as I am finding out). I pulled one of many all nighters (which I am trying to steer clear of) and spent most of my time kneading fondant to get a smooth color….not fun! Another issue I had was, because it took so long to get the colors I wanted, my fondant did not have enough time to set and thus was a bit limp. I just took it on shade at a time and finished, went off to the party site and set up, spent the day with my girls, family and friends and enjoyed the day. Then….came home and CRASHED! Long weekend but so much fun! So here it is…my daughter’s Dora Mermaid cake for her big birthday bash!

Strawberry Shortcake cake

May 18th, 2009  2 Comments

Happy Birthday Eliana!

On Saturday, May 16 Eliana celebrated her 1st birthday! Her mom contacted me to do a Strawberry shortcake cake in the shape of a strawberry, made to look like Shortcake’s house. So, I did some research and found tons of Strawberry Shortcake cakes. There were about 5 really cute strawberry shaped cakes that I used to reference my design. I took a few of the elements  I liked best from each and incorporated them into my design. Eliana’s mom also wanted 4 dz cupcakes, marble with plain green vanilla frosting. She had little paper toppers she wanted to use, instead of having me make some custom ones for her (so I don’t have any pics of those).

Def the best part of the party besides my baby girl of course.. Monica is the best…

This cake was a lot easier than I had anticipated and I had a blast creating it! I delivered it to the park at about 1:00 (in between baking/decorating a wedding cake and baking 1,000 minis for the Arthritis walk) to a local park. Well, I pulled up to the park and quickly realized you had to pay $5.00 for parking! I had zero cash on me (I never do) so I decided I’d have to charm the parking attendant to let me in just to drop off the cake. Well, first off it was a woman parking attendant (shoot!), I thought I’d give it a go anyway!

I explained to her I was just dropping off a cake for the party and wasn’t staying and asked if she could waive the fee. She then asked if I owned a bakery/business. I had the cake up front with me and she saw it. she started saying how professional it looked and again asked about the business. I told her that yes, we did own a business and before I could get another word out she tells me I am not an approved vendor and I could not enter for liability purposes! She told me I’d have to inform the person in charge of the party and they would have to come pick it up. So, I parked my car, called Eliana’s dad and he met me at the entrance. A friend of his pulled up in their car and he hopped in with the cake crossed the entrance, parked literally 30 feet away (where the party was being held), handed me the cake and we continued to the party site for set up. Kinda weird, but whatever…it all worked out. Eliana’s mom LOVED The cake and it looks as though the party was a big success!

Who’s up for a game of BUNCO…and cupcakes!

March 19th, 2009  1 Comment

The Two Parts Sugar kitchen whipped up a last minute, I mean last minute order of cupcakes for a ladies bunco gathering….and they were featured on Cupcakes Take The Cake!

bunco cupcakesFor those of you out there unfamiliar with Bunco here’s the rundown: Bunco (also Bunko and Bonko) is a parlour game played in teams with three dice. A winning throw in Bunco is to throw three of a kind of a specified number. Bunco is a social dice game involving 100% luck and no skill (there are no decisions to be made), scoring and a simple set of rules. Women who are part of a Bunco club take turns as the Bunco hostess, providing snacks (CUPCAKES), refreshments and the tables to set up the games. The hostess may also provide a door prize. Small amounts of money can be involved as well. The object of the game is to accumulate points and to roll certain combinations. The winners get prizes (provided by the hostess or pooled from the club resources) for accomplishments such as the highest score, the lowest score, or the most buncos. Prizes frequently center on themes associated with the game such as fancy dice, dice embedded in soap, t-shirts featuring illustrations of dice, etc.

So Chris, we wish you the best of luck in your Bunco game and hope you like the cupcakes! Thanks for including us in your gathering! A big thanks to Cupcakes Take The Cake for the post!
