Cakes and Kids contest winner!

June 20th, 2009  2 Comments

We have been working passionately to bring our customers cakes that they absolutely adore. We have been very pleased with the themes that have been brought to us, as they have been fun and new. We recently came across the cutest blog called Cakes and Kids. Cakes and Kids is a blog which chronicles one woman’s cake making successes and challenges while providing tips and ideas for making memorable parties for children. Recently they posted a contest for children’s cake photos. We decided to submit a few photos and waited to see what happened. We won! Our fairy cake took first place and we received honorable mention for two of our other cakes! How exciting! We hope to continue to get such great, open minded customers with such fun cake themes.  A big thank you to Cakes and Kids for the post!

Two Parts Sugar featured on Zen Cupcake!

June 20th, 2009  No Comments

In case you missed it, we recently had a custom order for some bridal shower cupcakes. We incorporated the soon to be groom’s love of technology and the soon to be bride’s fun loving personality and put them together to create our iphone cupcakes. We used the couples engagement photos to create custom cupcake wrappers and then topped the cupcakes with iphones, hearts, and laptops with lingerie slung over them! They turned out great and the couple loved them! Zen Cupcake, a blog devoted to all things cupcakes got a glimpse of our creations and posted them on their blog! Thanks Zen Cupcake for the post! You can read more about it here.

Broncos cupcakes

June 19th, 2009  2 Comments

Well, here’s the latest….MORE Broncos cupcakes. These were for Ryan’s 29th birthday…he’s a HUGE Broncos fan! I have to admit, I was not thrilled when I received this request….Those Bronco heads are time consuming! I LOVE when I get orders for things we have not done yet. I was however, presently surprised when I started decorating. I flew through these with ease and had fun doing so (even added a few extra details that weren’t on the first ones we did). So, here they are….

Princess Ava turns 5!

May 11th, 2009  No Comments

Friday we were contacted by a loving mother who was interested in having some cupcakes made for her daughter. She wanted to surprise her at school the following Monday with some princess themed cupcakes. We talked about some different options and finally came up with a selection of crowns, magic wands, flowers, Ava’s name, and swords (didn’t want the boys left out completely). She decided on our award winning Raspberry Red Velvet cupcakes with Raspberry Cream Cheese frosting.

Upcoming projects!

May 6th, 2009  No Comments

So, we haven’t posted too many blogs lately (there’s just been a lot going on!) As you may have heard, I just recently quit my job (which was fun at times, but really….who wants to work for someone else, right?) So, it’s cupcakes full force! Because I have an almost 3 year old and 1 1/2 year old daughters, with one on the way (due Nov 29) I am limited to my kitchen time. I usually leave the girls with Poppa (thank God for him…he is my hero!) at night and head to the Two Parts Sugar kitchen for some baking and decorating.

We have been taking on as many orders as we possibly can and loving every minute of the madness! Now that summer is right around the corner, weddings and birthday parties are popping up everywhere you turn. So, here’s what we are working on in the upcoming weeks:

Star Wars birthday cake and cupcakes, Wrestling birthday cupcakes, White wedding cake, Strawberry Shortcake birthday cake and cupcakes, Mini cupcakes for the Arthritis Walk, Fashion show cupcakes for Rancho Santa Margarita’s Senior Fashion Show, My Little Pony cupcakes, Jungle cake and cupcakes, Baby shower flower cupcakes, 2 sets of Lingerie bridal shower cupcakes, Engagement party cakes and cupcakes, Graduation cupcakes, Dinosaur cupcakes and Roller Derby fundraiser cupcakes!

We can’t wait to get started on these fun designs and share them with all of you!

If you have any questions or would like to place an order, you can contact us here! Don’t forget to check back with us for pictures of our creations! You can see some of our previous work on Flickr!

Lingerie cupcakes featured on Zen Cupcake!

April 8th, 2009  3 Comments

Here at the Two Parts Sugar kitchen we get lots of requests for lots of different things. The most recent was for a lingerie party! Not quite sure what it was all about, but there was to be lingerie involved….and CUPCAKES!

So, our client requested lingerie cupcakes and we couldn’t wait to get started! First, she wanted blue and black, which I was personally happy about. I thought it would be a nice change from the pink and red you typically see. Then I get an edited e-mail that says she changed her mind and now wants pink and brown (my least favorite color combos EVER). But, you have to give the people what they want! I then get a third e-mail stating she wanted pink and brown and animal print!!!!! She did say that she trusted me and to do what I thought would “work”. Ok, now I have to admit, I was a bit thrown off at first, and not very motivated….then it hit me! To be completely honest, I was trying to find a way out of the whole pink and brown thing and make something the client would LOVE.

My team (and husband) always tell me that I need to give the customers what they want….that is my goal every time, but I always want to include a little bit of me and my creativity, go the extra mile and give them what they want, but include that WOW factor they weren’t expecting. So, I knew right away when the color pink and the animal print came into play that I wanted to do the zebra print with pink accent…then, I figured the leopard print (and chocolate) could be the brown and my little lingerie cupcakes were born! Heres what they looked like:

I had so much fun making these and the client simply adored them. I was SO happy she liked them so much and that I was able to put a little bit of me into them.

To top off the satisfaction of a successful delivery, these cupcakes (and some of our previous lingerie cupcakes) were featured on Zen Cupcake! They did a whole spread on all the lingerie cupcakes we have done in the past! Here’s what Zen Cupcake says about our “Adorable cupcakes”:

Thanks Zen Cupcake for the post and support! If you haven’t checked out Zen Cupcake yet, what are you waiting for?! If you need to know about anything cupcake…this is the place to find it!

2009 LA Cupcake Challenge results!

April 1st, 2009  1 Comment

Going into this competition we were a little hesitant. We kinda felt like we were going up against the “big dogs”, which we were. I can’t say enough good things about all the bakeries involved in this competition. So, our main goal was to just get our name out there and to enjoy the experience. No, really. I know it’s a competition and you go to win, but we really were just in it to see what it was all about and gain some exposure.

Then, the competition came and went. I have to say, after hearing so many good things about our cupcakes and display, I did start to feel a little better about having entered this challenge. Then, we started to see a lot of good reviews and it was over. I have to be completely honest here, the competitor in me was set loose! I wanted first place. I thought we had a chance and now, anything less would be a disappointment.

I began to google and see what I could find about the results. We were supposed to know by Tuesday. I waited and waited, and waited. Finally we get an e-mail that the results would be in on Wednesday…oh, the suspense. So, this morning I woke up ran downstairs, one girl in each arm (my 2 and 1 year old girls). I set them down for breakfast and immediately started up the computer. The results were in!

I really want to thank everyone who helped and supported us with the giant task of baking 1,000 mini cupcakes for this competition. The support was unbelievable! Oh, and next year we want first place OVERALL! Watch out……we’re out for blood!

Congratulations to all the other bakeries who competed, for doing such an amazing job, and to the top placers for coming up with such yummy cupcakes!

Two Parts Sugar featured on Zen Cupcake’s “Challenge Wrap Up”

March 31st, 2009  No Comments

Today’s the big day, and quite honestly, we can hardly handle the suspense! Be ready for more blog posts, as the winner’s of the 2009 LA Cupcake Challenge are announced today!

Maria and I with the nesquik bunny

Getting a head start on things is Cupcake Blog Zen Cupcake. They have  posted a few pictures and an article summing up the event, and we were in it! They chose one of our favorite articles, where LA Times Reporter Elina Shatkin states:

Ultimately, it was all about riotous flavor pairings and unexpected finds, though many a cupcake was undone by frosting that was too sweet and overpowered the cake. But the white chocolate macadamia cupcake from Two Parts Sugar managed to melt the arteries of this die-hard white chocolate hater….

Again, thanks Zen Cupcake for the continued support and to Elina for the awesome review! And now, we must wait…and wait. You get the idea. We’ll let you know the results, good or not so much, as soon as we here back from Dan over at Drink, Eat, Play. Oh, and I have to say, Dan did an amazing job organizing the event. It could not have gone smoother in my opinion! I guess there’s a reason why he does what he does! A big thanks goes out to Dan and everyone at Drink, Eat, Play for doing such a great job organizing this event (and getting us in on such short notice)!
