Wedding season is definitely NOT over!

October 14th, 2009  2 Comments

We were contacted back in May about a wedding cake with a tropical feel. Jacqueline (the bride) was going to be accenting her wedding with plumerias and other tropical flowers. How FUN! After going back and forth on a number of different options, we finally came up with her “dream” cake. A four tiered cake, two tiers marble with chocolate icing, and two tiers raspberry red velvet with raspberry cream cheese frosting. All covered in vanilla buttercream with swiss dots and draped in a cascade of plumerias. We were back an d forth a lot about the colored plumerias she wanted to use. We went from all white, to all pink, to finally deciding about doing both….great call Jacquline! We drove to vista the day of the wedding to deliver the cake and it was a hit!

I got sooo many compliments on the look of the cake, loved the flowers….
…..I really liked the cream cheese filing, if I could change anything, I would have put that yummy stuff all over the top of the cake, it was sooo yummy. Thanks for everything Monica!!!!! I’ll be calling for my cupcakes here and there thanks!!!!

plumeria-cake

…My mom just called and said the marble was so great, I also wanted to let you know that the marble was so good, I still have a bunch and all of my friends said the cake tasted great!! I was totally happy with everything, going to cut into the top red velvet tonight!! Dude you did the best! im really happy with everything, also my mom said the flowers tasted amazing!!!! She called and asked me to save some more flowers for her to eat. The flowers were a big hit at the wedding with all of the kids!!!!! There was like 25 kids running around with those flowers and they were all coming back for seconds! I think Two Parts Sugar is going to go really far. I’ve been referring whom ever I know…

Welcome baby Adrienne!

June 26th, 2009  4 Comments

My youngest sister Alicia is pregnant with her first baby! She is due August 7, 2009 and I really could not be more excited! Being 7 years older than her, I have seen and remember a lot of her childhood. Alicia has been through A LOT in her short 21 years of life….some things brought upon herself, others just plain bad luck. Through it all she has come out on top and has a much better outlook on life. I still worry about her a lot (almost as if she were a daughter of mine) and about the decisions she will make in her life. I can truly say I am proud of EVERY single one of her accomplishments, big or small, and  how far she has come, especially this past year. Alicia…I love you more than you could ever know and I will be here for you always!

OK….ON TO THE CUPCAKES!!!! So, Alicia is very girly so I knew her cake/cupcakes would have to reflect that. Her shower will be held at Mimi’s Cafe and will be decorated in pink, pearls, and flowers! The cake had to fit in perfectly. We started with the obvious….pink, pearls, and flowers. Then we decided upon some little pink booties to tie in the baby aspect of it all. Here’s what we came up with!

baby shower cake/cupcakes Adrienne

Baby Adrienne, I cannot wait for you to arrive! I can’t wait to see you smile, laugh, cry, and all that other baby stuff! I can’t wait to hold you in my arms, rock you to sleep, and yes, even change your stinky diaper! I can’t wait for you to play with my kiddos! I JUST CAN’T WAIT TO BE AN AUTIE!

Please, let us know what you think…If you have and questions, or would like to place an order you can reach us here!

Cakes and Kids contest winner!

June 20th, 2009  2 Comments

We have been working passionately to bring our customers cakes that they absolutely adore. We have been very pleased with the themes that have been brought to us, as they have been fun and new. We recently came across the cutest blog called Cakes and Kids. Cakes and Kids is a blog which chronicles one woman’s cake making successes and challenges while providing tips and ideas for making memorable parties for children. Recently they posted a contest for children’s cake photos. We decided to submit a few photos and waited to see what happened. We won! Our fairy cake took first place and we received honorable mention for two of our other cakes! How exciting! We hope to continue to get such great, open minded customers with such fun cake themes.  A big thank you to Cakes and Kids for the post!

Dora Mermaid cake

June 8th, 2009  3 Comments

So, this weekend my eldest daughter turned 3 years old! How time flies! She wanted a Dora party and immediately I started thinking CAKE! Anticipating the sunny California weather, I thought hey, let’s do a water type party. We can get an inflatable water slide and make it a Dora Mermaid theme. Needless to say the weather was horrible the week prior and we canceled the slide and went for the bouncer instead. Too bad all the party favors I got were water guns, inflatable Dora swim rings/tubes, and other water related items…go figure! But the cake, ahhhh the cake! I immediately knew what I wanted to do.

I wanted a 3D type effect for the waves and wanted it to be fondant, dora Mermaid on rocks as a topper and filled in with little fish. Well, it was a fairly simple cake (or so I thought) until I got to that darn fondant! i wanted to do marshmallow fondant cause I wanted it to be yummy. Ok really people….made of marshmallows or not, NOBODY eats it! I am SO going with pre-made from now on! I had to get 9 different shades of blue for this cake….and marshmallow fondant is not easy to blend colors (as I am finding out). I pulled one of many all nighters (which I am trying to steer clear of) and spent most of my time kneading fondant to get a smooth color….not fun! Another issue I had was, because it took so long to get the colors I wanted, my fondant did not have enough time to set and thus was a bit limp. I just took it on shade at a time and finished, went off to the party site and set up, spent the day with my girls, family and friends and enjoyed the day. Then….came home and CRASHED! Long weekend but so much fun! So here it is…my daughter’s Dora Mermaid cake for her big birthday bash!

Busy weekend!

June 1st, 2009  1 Comment

This weekend we had a lot going on. We just finished a “King of the Jungle” baby shower cake and cupcakes, My Little Pony cupcakes, Lingerie cupcakes, two engagement cakes and cupcakes, and 4 wedding sample boxes!

The “King of the Jungle” order was so fun to do and we loved how it all turned out. The cake was raspberry red velvet with raspberry cream cheese icing, as were the cupcakes. You can read more about it here.

I can not tell u how much we loved the cake & cupcakes!! I never expected the cake to look as beautiful as it did!! U matched our theme to a T! Our guests couldn’t stop talking about it…

-Lisa Plata

…It was the greatest cake I’ve had!

The My Little Pony cupcakes were for a little girl named Natalia who was turning 1! They turned out so sweet. It was an order for 40 cupcakes, half marble with chocolate buttercream mousse, and half raspberry red velvet with white chocolate buttercream. It was the funniest thing too…when I was working out the last details with Natalia’s mom it turned out we had actually gone to school together and were on the same cheerleading team!!!!!! I couldn’t believe it! You know, first and foremost, this business is a means of income for my family and me. Second, it is a creative outlet for me. I wouldn’t be doing it though, unless it was bringing smiles to the faces of our clients. I love when one of our cakes or cupcakes just wows someone and brings a smile to their face. Now, as an added bonus, it has been reuniting me with old friends and allowed me to meet new people. Man, I have the best job in the world!!!!

OMG Monica, UR cup cakes were amazing….my guest loved them! especially the rasp. red velvet! OMG to die for…

-Betty Castro

Next, we had an order for some bridal shower cupcakes. You can’t have a bridal shower without some of our lingerie cupcakes! This was an order for 24 minis, in purple, lavender  and white. They were marble cupcakes with white chocolate buttercream icing. These were the littlest lingerie pieces we’ve done to date.

Those were for my Bridal shower last weekend!! They were AMAZING! THe frosting just melted on my mouth. Great Job!

Then, we had our largest order for the weekend…two 6″ cakes and 3 dz cupcakes. This order was fun because we more or less had creative liberty on it. The only specifications were the flavors, and one cake was to be blue buttercream with the words “She said yes” and the other to be covered in white marshmallow fondant and covered in blue swirls. So, we went with it!

The first cake was vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream icing. It was covered in blue vanilla buttercream and adorned with edible pearls. When we ordered the pearls we requested them in 4 sizes all in the same color. Well, as you can see some of the pearls were more white than other. We ordered them from Fancy Flours and once they found out they took care of the situation immediately. A big thank you to Fancy Flours for their amazing customer service and speedy delivery timing! So, we wanted to keep it simple, so we did just the pearls and the requested “She said yes” on top. Then, as I was taking the cake out of the refrigerator as we were loading up to go, I scraped the entire top of the cake on the shelf above (mind you I had only gotten an hour of sleep the previous night)!!!! Luckily I was able to repair it to where it looked as though nothing happened and we were able to arrive on time.

To go along with this cake we did 1 dz raspberry red velvet cupcakes with raspberry cream cheese frosting, decorated with sugar sprinkles, and edible pearls. We also included white chocolate macadamia nut cupcakes topped with fondant flowers.

Pearl engagement cupcake tower

The second cake was pumpkin cake with cream cheese filling and covered in marshmallow fondant. The request for this one….white with blue swirls. I had a hard time getting started on this. Swirls….hmmm…do I use buttercream or rolled fondant, how big should I make them, should I add anything else? I just started covering the cake with the MMF (marshmallow fondant) and once that was done I added the turquoise border. Then it hit me, well partially. I decided to go with a lighter fondant swirls and cover just the sides. After that was done, it just needed something else. So, I added the swirls at the top to match the border. It still did not look finished. I am always very cautious at this point because it is very easy to go overboard instead of just stopping and keeping a design clean and simple.  I followed my heart and added the flowers. Then, last minute, I decided some shimmering dots would make a nice accent and tie in the darker turquoise. That was that. I absolutely loved how it turned out!

To go along with this cake I wanted to incorporate the dark and light turquoise. I almost went with swirls, but wanted something a little more romantic. So, I went with interlocking hearts…what could be more appropriate for the newly engaged couple. They were set atop coconut cupcakes with coconut icing and toped with toasted coconut. We also added some of the white chocolate macadamia nut cupcakes with flowers to finish it up.

Lastly, we had 4 sample boxes to get out for some prospective wedding orders. The flavors included chocolate/coconut, raspberry red velvet, white chocolate macadamia nut, coconut/coconut, marble/white chocolate, pumpkin/cream cheese, chocolate/chocolate, and vanilla/vanilla. We’ve booked one so far and are waiting to hear back from the orders…wish us luck!

King of the Jungle

May 30th, 2009  7 Comments

Just over two weeks ago we were contacted by a woman who needed a cake and cupcakes for a jungle themed baby shower. We were excited to do it…we love when we get request for something we haven’t done before. So, we ask the woman for the date she needs them and she tells us May 30. Well, we already had orders for an engagement party which consisted of 2 small cakes and 3 dozen cupcakes (all different flavors), 24 lingerie cupcakes, and 40 My Little Pony cupcakes…all for that same weekend. There is nothing I dislike more than turning away an order…especially when it sounds like fun! We are however, only three sisters (technically only 2…one is still on bed rest with her pregnancy). We always want to insure plenty of time to produce the best quality cupcakes with the most creative decorations and not take on too much. So we took this order and made the cut off there. I don’t think I have gotten more requests for a single weekend before! We had to turn down 8 other orders!!! It’s times like these that I wish I had my own shop….some day:)

We received an e-mail with all the details, flavors, name, ideas, colors and a link to a photo of the invite and party decor….she said to take it from there, and we did.

We had so much fun with this order and the woman LOVED them! While the plates and invites only included “the king of the jungle,” our client requested we give him some friends and incorporate a zebra and monkey. Congratulations and a warm welcome to baby Aiden!

Strawberry Shortcake cake

May 18th, 2009  2 Comments

Happy Birthday Eliana!

On Saturday, May 16 Eliana celebrated her 1st birthday! Her mom contacted me to do a Strawberry shortcake cake in the shape of a strawberry, made to look like Shortcake’s house. So, I did some research and found tons of Strawberry Shortcake cakes. There were about 5 really cute strawberry shaped cakes that I used to reference my design. I took a few of the elements  I liked best from each and incorporated them into my design. Eliana’s mom also wanted 4 dz cupcakes, marble with plain green vanilla frosting. She had little paper toppers she wanted to use, instead of having me make some custom ones for her (so I don’t have any pics of those).

Def the best part of the party besides my baby girl of course.. Monica is the best…

-Carmen Trevino (Eliana’s Mommy)

This cake was a lot easier than I had anticipated and I had a blast creating it! I delivered it to the park at about 1:00 (in between baking/decorating a wedding cake and baking 1,000 minis for the Arthritis walk) to a local park. Well, I pulled up to the park and quickly realized you had to pay $5.00 for parking! I had zero cash on me (I never do) so I decided I’d have to charm the parking attendant to let me in just to drop off the cake. Well, first off it was a woman parking attendant (shoot!), I thought I’d give it a go anyway!

I explained to her I was just dropping off a cake for the party and wasn’t staying and asked if she could waive the fee. She then asked if I owned a bakery/business. I had the cake up front with me and she saw it. she started saying how professional it looked and again asked about the business. I told her that yes, we did own a business and before I could get another word out she tells me I am not an approved vendor and I could not enter for liability purposes! She told me I’d have to inform the person in charge of the party and they would have to come pick it up. So, I parked my car, called Eliana’s dad and he met me at the entrance. A friend of his pulled up in their car and he hopped in with the cake crossed the entrance, parked literally 30 feet away (where the party was being held), handed me the cake and we continued to the party site for set up. Kinda weird, but whatever…it all worked out. Eliana’s mom LOVED The cake and it looks as though the party was a big success!

Calling all Star Wars fans!

May 9th, 2009  2 Comments

About two weeks ago I was contacted to do a last minute order of 4 dozen mini cupcakes for a teenage girls birthday. She was planning to take them to her ASB class. Nothing fancy, just some of our Raspberry Red Velvet’s with pink, silver and white sprinkles. So, Lillian (mom) picked them up and later that night sent me an e-mail stating that

The cupcakes for my daughters ASB class were a hit!!  We have all had a nibble and were very happy.

-Lillian

Star Wars cake and cupcakesShe also asked if I could do a Star Wars cake and cupcakes for her son Quinton who would be turning 7. I jumped at the opportunity. Growing up my big brother was a huge Star Wars fan, so I took a special interest in this project. This wasn’t just any Star Wars project, oh no, specifically it was Star Wars Clone Wars…The Animated Series! Totally unfamiliar with how this might be different from the Star Wars I knew, I  began my research….starting with big brother. He immediately suggested lightsabers that actually lit up! OOOOHHHH YYYAAA! Then he started in with a stand that had hidden speakers and would play themed music…..I had to stop him there.

I got back to Lillian with a few ideas and we got all the details down. While doing so, she let me know that her son corrected me when I mistook Luke for Anakin! HA! Then I knew I had my work cut out for me. Among the requests was a cake topper of General Grievous…..have you seen that thing?!?! I wasn’t sure where to go with that one. I couldn’t wait to start this order! One hiccup we encountered was our first order for some lightsabers to use. they came in waaaaaay to big (6″ instead of 2″) and they were the wrong color! Slight set back, but with only 1 day before Quinton’s party we were able to find something that would work. Here’s what we came up with:

Chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream. General Grievous, Yoda, Anakin cake toppers, complete with light sabers that light up!…..Millennium Falcon and Spider Droid flying……Storm Trooper and Battle Droid at base of cake, also with light sabers that light up! Wish we could’ve gotten a picture of them lit…but they were glow sticks and once activated only last so long.

Star Wars cupcakes

4 dozen marble cupcakes with alternating vanilla buttercream and chocolate mousse buttercream. Storm Troopers, Yoda, lightsabers, R2-D2, C-3PO.

Couple marries on The Osbournes “Reloaded”…and we did their cake!

March 31st, 2009  No Comments

 All Aboard the Crazy Train!

Hop aboard the “Crazy Train” when Ozzy, Sharon, Jack and Kelly Osbourne turn another television convention upside down and inside out with their new series OSBOURNES: RELOADED premiering after AMERICAN IDOL Tuesday, March 31 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX.

The series will also venture off-stage with recurring segments including “Osbourne in the USA,” where members of the family go to work in places such as a fast-food drive-thru; “Osbournes Meet the Osbournes,” where the family goes cross-country and lives with other Osbourne families; and the “Littlest Osbournes,” where pint-size, potty-mouthed versions of Sharon and Ozzy recreate moments from their early days…in all their four-letter glory.

So, about two weeks ago, Lili contacted me about doing a wedding cake for her. She explained how she was married on the show and didn’t get to have a wedding cake. She is planning a premiere party with some friends at her place to celebrate the airing of the show and of course the wedding. So, we threw a few ideas around. She wanted to have a cake with an Osbourne feel, yet still have it be a wedding cake. She decided on going with a white cake with red, white, and black roses, and adorned with a black ribbon.

ROSE WEDDING CAKE

You can view a preview clip of the show here, which again, airs tonight on Fox right after American Idol. If you look really close, you can see Lily giving her husband a smooch towards the end of the clip! Congratulations Lily on your marriage, we’ll be watching tonight!
